Dry Conditions Spark Numerous Brush Fires Across Front Range In One Day
LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Three brush fires broke out across the Front Range on Saturday, one forcing the closure of a major highway.
Interstate 25 was shut down shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday due to a brush fire on private land in Larimer County near the Wyoming border. The road was reopened about 2 hours later, after several acres of dry grass had been scorched.
Another fire broke out on Fort Carson Saturday afternoon in a practice range, and reached 100 acres by 4:30 p.m. Firefighters set up a containment lines hoping the fire would burn itself out.
Traffic was restricted to one lane on US 85 in Sedalia because of a grass fire suspected to be sparked by a cigarette. Douglas County and South Metro crews were able to quickly extinguish it.
The frequent flare ups on Saturday show just how dry the conditions are right now. The threat of wildfire is expected to continue with the warm weather, despite it nearing the end of summer.
