Drunken Uber Rider Caught On Camera Violently Attacking Driver

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBS4) - Uber has banned a man in California from ever using the service again after he was caught on camera striking a driver.

Edward Caban was driving a man in Los Angeles when a discussion about directions led to a violent attack. The exchange was caught on video.

"Dude you have to give me directions," Caban said.

"Why do I have to give you directions. You put my address in the phone," said the rider.

"No you didn't , you refused to," said Caban.

The Uber passenger becomes belligerent then the video seems to show him falling over in the back seat.

"You're too drunk to give me directions," Caban says.

"No, I'm not," says the rider.

"No, I'm kicking you out," says Caban.

"No, I'm not too drunk," the rider says.

"Nope. That' sit," says Caban as he pulls the car to a stop.

"The next thing I know I've just got fists flying at my face, and I reached for the pepper spray," Caban said.

The man swears at and beats Caban from the back seat, yanking his hair.

A law enforcement official told CBS affiliate KCBS that the passenger, 32-year-old Benjamin Golden, is a senior marketing manager for Taco Bell.

"The only way that I felt I was going to get him to stop beating me was to incapacitate him, was to use some kind of self-defense. I don't believe he would have stopped," said Caban.

When riders sign up for Uber, they agree to a code of conduct.  There's also a rating system for riders, but that's not enough to make some drivers feel safe.

Caban says he's done with Uber for now.

"No, I don't feel safe driving for Uber anymore," he said.

Benjamin Golden is now facing charges including assault on a cab driver and public intoxication.
