Driver Cited In Bonnie Brae Crash That Killed 3-Year-Old

DENVER (CBS4) - The driver in an accident that killed a 3-year-old boy earlier this month has been cited for careless driving.

Austin Strasser was killed on Feb. 13 while crossing a street with his mother in Denver's Bonnie Brae neighborhood.

Police say Joan Hinkemeyer, 78, was turning from East Ohio Avenue onto South University Boulevard when she hit Strasser and his mother and sister. Tiffanie Strasser and her 6-year-old daughter Audrey were not seriously injured.

Denver's district attorney has cited Hinkemeyer with careless driving resulting in death and two counts of careless driving resulting in injury. The charges carry a possible 3 year jail sentence.

Hinkemeyer told police the family was not visible because of sun glare as she turn onto University from Ohio Street.

She is due in court next month.

Denver is adding four new signs warning drivers to yield to pedestrians at the intersection.
