Denver Police Chief Chases, Captures Armed Man

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Police Chief Robert White chased down, captured and restrained an armed suspect Tuesday afternoon as the chief was returning to Denver Police Headquarters.

"The Chief saw the guy chasing people at 16th and Gilpin," said Commander Matt Murray, an aide to the Chief.

According to Murray, the man was armed with a knife and was chasing more than one person.

Chief White was alone in his department vehicle and stopped and pursued the man on foot. Some distance from his vehicle, White, who is 62, caught the man, held him at gunpoint, disarmed him and arrested him.

Murray says Chief White suspected the man he was chasing had "mental issues."

Murray says Chief White called 911 for help using his department cellphone as he says he left his police radio in his vehicle when he engaged in the foot chase.

Other officers arrived and took the man into custody.
