Deputy Ambushed While Trying To Help Driver

DOUGLAS COUNTY (CBS4) - One suspect was rushed to the hospital after an officer-involved shooting involving a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy.

The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Friday at County Line Road and Santa Fe. The deputy pulled over to assist a stranded motorist in an SUV on the side of the road when the suspect produced an assault rifle.

The deputy ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. When he didn't, the deputy fired.

The suspect was taken into custody and rushed to the hospital.

"This was not the type of traffic stop or citizen contact that this deputy expected. We weren't called, he was just on routine patrol, wanted to assist a motorist, thought he was assisting a motorist and then it elevated very quickly," said Douglas County Chief Deputy Steve Johnson.

County Line Road was closed from Southpark to Santa Fe Drive during the investigation.

The deputy was not injured in the shooting.

The investigation was taken over by the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Team as they work to figure out what led to the shooting.
