Petition Demands Separate Look Into Colorado Police Shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- More than 2,000 people in Colorado have signed a petition asking for an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting that killed a young black man. The Gazette reported Monday that Shaun Walls created the petition and plans to present it to state Attorney General Phil Weiser on Tuesday.

Officials say 19-year-old De'Von Bailey was shot in the back after running away from two Colorado Springs police officers Aug. 3.

Authorities say the shooting was investigated by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and prosecutors could take months to review findings.

The Bailey family says the police department, sheriff's office and district attorney's office work too closely together to be objective.

Walls says the petition also proposes the creation of a citizen review board to monitor future investigations into police misconduct.
