Deputy 'Alert And Talking' After Accidentally Shooting Self During Training

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - A Boulder County sheriff's deputy was injured after accidentally shooting himself Thursday morning during monthly handgun training.

According to Heidi Prentup with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred just after 9:30 a.m. at a shooting range in Longmont and the Longmont Police Department is assisting in the investigation.

"The deputy was on the firing line, drew his weapon, engaged the target, holstered his weapon and turned to the range training deputy and said he believed he shot himself in the leg," Prentup said in a statement.

Emergency first aid was immediately administered and the deputy was taken to a local medical center to be treated.

"The deputy was alert and talking to emergency medical personnel while he was transported," Prentup said.

The sheriff's office isn't releasing the deputy's name until has family can be notified.
