Deputies: Good Samaritan Shot Himself
GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Deputies with the Garfield County Sheriff's Office say a man who claimed he was shot as he was trying to help a motorist earlier this month, actually shot himself.
Deputies initially believed someone shot a good Samaritan who stopped to help after seeing a car pulled over on the side of the road. It happened on State Highway 13 about nine miles north of Rifle around 12:30 a.m. on July 18.
The man reported he was able to return to his car, called 911 and drove about four miles to the Rifle Fireside Bowling Alley. From there he was met by law enforcement officers and first responders and taken by ambulance to Grand River Medical Center where he was airlifted to St. Mary's in Grand Junction.
According to the victim's initial report, deputies were looking for a red car whose occupants the victim claimed has shot him.
Investigators later determined the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. The investigation continues to determine the reason for the shooting and rationale behind the initial false report.
