Large Water Main Break Creates Big Mess For Denver Neighborhood

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Water sent crews to a large water main break in the Berkeley neighborhood Sunday morning. CBS4's Michael Abeyta shared images of cars nearly submerged in the water near 45th Avenue and Perry Street.

Denver Water says crews shut off the water at around 11:20 a.m. Officials also told CBS4 the water main is 24".

"We've got different infrastructure underneath the ground," said Travis Thompson, Denver Water spokesman. "Think about it like a highway. You've got big highways that move a lot of cars to different neighborhoods. Well, we've got big pipes that move a lot of water to different neighborhoods."

Thompson shared an apology to the residents and businesses in the area and asked for their patience.

Regis University alerted students and staff water is shut off on campus due to the break.

Crews ask the public to avoid the area. Denver Police closed roads in the area.

An image from Denver Water shows mud covering the roadways and sidewalks. Officials say 20 restoration crews are waiting to help homeowners as soon as crews clear the water and debris to those homes.

Thompson also says crews will spend the next few days working on the damage roads.

It's not clear how it broke in the first place. It's also not clear the extent of the damage to property. Denver Water also does not have an estimate of how many residents do not have water.
