Denver Starts Tax Campaign For National Western Upgrades
DENVER (AP) - Denver's mayor is kicking off a campaign to get voters to approve higher hotel and car rental taxes to pay for a massive makeover of the city's ailing National Western Complex.
Mayor Michael Hancock is launching the campaign Wednesday. The vote would authorize money for upgrading the complex into an event site and education center for Colorado State University.
The 10-year plan would cost about $856 million. That would include an estimated $476 million raised from extending the lodging and car rental taxes. Later plans call for a replacement to the 10,000-seat Denver Coliseum and a new exposition hall.
Colorado State University plans to raise $16.2 million to equip a horse hospital in the equestrian center.
The site plays host to the National Western Stock Show each January.
