Winter Storm Warning For Denver Tonight

DENVER (CBS4) - A dynamic spring storm taking shape over Colorado threatens to bring a return to winter for the Rocky Mountains.

Heavy rain and flash flooding on Saturday is expected to change over to a heavy wet snow overnight and into the morning hours on Mother's Day.

The National Weather Service has placed Denver, the adjacent foothills and the northeast plains under a Winter Storm Warning for the potential to see widespread heavy snow. From 9pm Saturday to 9am Sunday.

Current information suggests the potential to see anywhere from 5-10 inches of snow in Denver with totals up to a foot in the higher terrain south and west of the city.

In the mountains west of Denver a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the potential to see up to 16 inches of snow this weekend.

If the storm comes together it will be the second year in a row for the Mile High City to see snow on Mother's Day.

May snow isn't uncommon with a 30-year average of 1.1 inches in Denver.
