Denver Post Employees To Protest Job Eliminations Plan

DENVER (CBS4) - Some members of the Denver Post newsroom staff are staging a rally on Friday to protest a new round of planned job eliminations at the newspaper.

The Denver Newspaper Guild says its members will hold the rally at noon in front of the Denver Post building at Colfax Avenue and Broadway in downtown Denver. They say the rally is part of a "day of action to protect journalism."

"The action will shine a light on the negative impact our community faces from the loss of journalists covering the region," the Guild wrote in a prepared statement.

According to the Guild, Alden Global Capital -- the company that has a controlling interest in the newspaper -- has made several staff reductions in the newsroom in recent years and now is asking for 26 more journalists to voluntarily accept an offer to leave their jobs by the end of this week. They are concerned layoffs could result if enough staff don't accept the offer.

The Denver Post hadn't responded to CBS4's request for a comment about this story several hours after the attempt was made.
