She is a founder of the Center for Policing Equity, a think tank aimed at strengthening the relationships between community and police. She was also heavily involved in the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice, which was the DOJ's pilot program aimed at reducing racial bias among police officers.

Keesee was a captain at the Denver police department, where she worked for 25 years, and also taught at the University of Colorado.

The NYPD has undergone massive ideological shifts since William Bratton took over, emphasizing community relationships and de-escalation. Keesee says she will build upon that, and strengthen it.
