Denver Police: Move Over, It's The Law

DENVER (CBS4) - It's called the Move Over Law in Colorado, but Denver Police Traffic Investigator Sgt. Mike Farr says many drivers may not even know it exists.
"On approach to a stationary emergency vehicle, you are required to move over at least one lane," said Farr. "If you're unable to move a lane away, slow down to a point that you can pass without being careless."
And the law doesn't only protect police.
Drivers are also required to move over for fire engines, ambulances and tow trucks.
Early Friday morning, a driver heading westbound on Interstate 70 at Peoria Street broke that law and rear-ended a parked police car with an officer inside.
"If you see they're on the right shoulder move to the left, and if we're on the left move to the right," Farr said. "Move out of the way."
And DPD says, most importantly, slow down.
"The slower you approach, the better you have to react to an emergency, and not become part of the emergency."
