Denver Police Shoot & Kill Bank Robbery Suspect, Protesters Quick To Respond

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver investigated an officer-involved shooting in downtown Denver on Tuesday afternoon that left one suspect dead.

Police tweeted out an update on the investigation at 14th Avenue and Bannock Street.

Officers with the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force were trying to serve a warrant on a bank robbery suspect while he was in a car. He stopped somewhere in the 1300 block of Bannock but Police Chief Robert White said he didn't get out of the vehicle. It is unclear whether the suspect fired but one officer did shoot him.

"I thought they were gun shots, other people thought it was the construction across the alley. So I said, 'Let's go over to that side of the building.' When we got here the cars were pretty much like they are now. The door was open to the vehicle, you could see the gentleman slumped over," said witness Brenda Johnson.

The suspect killed in the shooting has not been identified by police but the man's brother told CBS4 he is Dion Avila, 40. Police say the suspect was wanted for an armed bank robbery that occurred in mid-March.

No officers were hurt.

Because it's not clear if the suspect was armed protesters were quick to respond.

"What's wrong with you guys," a protester yelled at police.
