Attempted Murder Suspect In Custody Following High-Speed Chase
DENVER (CBS4) - An attempted murder suspect is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase in northeast Denver Thursday morning.
Police in Commerce City were assisting Arvada police in an attempt to apprehend the attempted murder suspect. Commerce City police attempted to make a traffic stop but the suspect fled and a chase ensued.
Denver police got involved in the chase which ended in the Park Hill neighborhood. The suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot near 32nd Avenue and Ash Street.
"The suspect was seen in Commerce City. Commerce City police attempted to do a traffic stop and the suspect took off in vehicle and pursued into Denver," Doug Schepman with Denver Police said.
Police set up a perimeter, called in a SWAT team and surrounded a home in the area. After a brief standoff the suspect was taken into custody.
A reverse 911 call went out to residents in the area.
Neighbor Janine Elliot watched the suspect from her house.
"This black truck pulled up and one police car behind it ... and the driver eluded. He just ran," Elliot said.
Cody Austhof was watching TV when he says the suspect ran into his garage. Police officers busted in and moved him to safety. He said the ordeal was scary.
"Yeah ... incredibly (pounds hands on chest) … just the whole time like not really understanding what was going on the whole time," Austhof said. "It was just such a sudden situation to be put into."
The suspect was later identified as Kirk Len Boyd, 37, who police say shot an acquaintance in an apartment building in the area of West 55th Avenue and Newland Street in Arvada in the early morning on Saturday.
"The victim later sought medical treatment and survived his injury," Arvada police spokesperson Jill McGranahan said in statement.
Boyd has an extensive criminal history -- 11 pages worth of arrests dating back to 1997. Sources say he's affiliated to the 211 Crew, a white supremacist prison gang, active both in and out of prison.
