Denver Gets Funds To Help Sun Valley Neighborhood

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver police say a new grant will help them transform one part of the city.

The $1 million grant will go towards improving the Sun Valley neighborhood, which is located just to the south of Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Approximately 85 percent of the neighborhood's residents live below the poverty line. The area also has a high crime rate.

The grant money will help pay for increased police patrols, which will include police officers using Segways.

"There is no other neighborhood that is as strong as Sun Valley in terms of its resiliency," City Councilman Paul Lopez said. "There is no other neighborhood right now, at this moment, that deserves this opportunity."

The grant will also be used to create new education programs and activities for families in the neighborhood.
