Fire Truck Crash: Denver Fire Chief Shares 'Heartfelt Sympathies' To Family Of Victim

DENVER (CBS4) - The Denver Fire Department is in mourning, along with the family and friends of three unidentified people in a sedan, who were killed in a crash with a fire truck in Denver on Saturday.

"It's with a heavy heart that I stand here in front of you today," said Fire Chief Desmond Fulton at a press conference.

Firefighters were responding to reports of smoke at a building near 14th and Kalamath Street. They were running lights and sirens and slowed down when they approached the busy intersection near North Broadway and Speer Boulevard -- but still they collided with the sedan.

One person died at the scene and two others were taken to the hospital with severe injuries

"My heartfelt condolences and sincere prayers and thoughts go out to those effected," says Chief Fulton.

One firefighter suffered injuries to his knees but still, after the collision firefighters sprang into action.

"They immediately being the professionals that they are recognized the severity of this and even though they were shaken up and sustained some injuries themselves they immediately went to work," said Chief Fulton.

The Denver Police Deaprtment is now investigating. Chief Fulton says they are being fully cooperative and transparent.

"So that way the confidence and trust that we worked so hard to earn that we don't lose," he said. "A life was lost, other people are fighting for their lives right now, and I've got five men at home that are revisiting the scene in their head over and over and over again."

Officials did not identify the victims.
