Denver City Council Moves Ahead With Minimum Wage Increase

DENVER (CBS4)- A higher minimum wage could be coming to people who work in Denver. The Denver City Council moved forward on the minimum wage increase at its meeting on Monday night.

The ordinance would incrementally increase the minimum wage to $15.87 per hour by 2022. The proposal passed its first reading on Monday night.

It would impact 90,000 people who work in the city. If approved, the ordinance would take effect Jan. 1, 2020 an initially raise the minimum wage to $12.85 an hour.

At the same time on Monday, Colorado released a proposal for new rules that will mean a different threshold for salaried workers to receive overtime pay. The proposal also calls for extending minimum wage requirements to more jobs.

That change is supported by Gov. Jared Polis.
