Democrats Take Advantage Of Busy Weekend To Get Out The Vote
DENVER (CBS4)- Democrats are taking advantage of a busy weekend in Colorado to register people to vote.
In 2012, Democrats registered 5,000 voters during PrideFest weekend. This year they plan to top that as 1,000 volunteers will fan out across the state.
They will take advantage of the crowds at PrideFest, Denver Comic Con, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Juneteenth Music Festival.
"The energy is there and we're just making sure that we're tapping it out of people," said volunteer Claudia Morera.
Organizers and volunteers from around the country have descended on Denver for what they're calling a weekend of action that includes heavy patrols at PrideFest.
"After what happened in Orlando, I think it's very important for us to get out there and to show that we're here, we're not going anywhere, and you're going to hear us very loudly," said Democratic organizer Rayma Barma. "We're going to be in every corner of the city, in every corner of the state, registering every single voter."
Barma moved to Colorado from Texas last month just for the 2016 election, "I was like, I just need to get out there. I need to do everything that I can in this election. It's very, very important."
"I chose to be here specifically because I think it's that important," said Morera.
Colorado is a critical swing state in the 2016 Presidential race but home to what will be one of the most watched senate races in the country between Democrat incumbent Michael Bennet and the Republican challenger.
"All of these volunteers have huge infrastructures of people who they know, that they can now tap into," said Morera.
