Defense Tries To Lower Bond For Teen In High School Attack Plot

DENVER (CBS4) - One of two teenage girls involved in a plot to attack Mountain Vista High School was back in court Friday morning.

Brooke Higgins appeared before a judge at 10:30 a.m. with a new defense team that is focusing on lowering her bond to get her home. Higgins, 16, has been charged with conspiracy of attempted murder along with Sienna Johnson, 16. Both have been charged as adults for the alleged plot.

She was assigned this new council last time she appeared in court, but both teams declined to comment on why the change was made. Her new team continued to argue they need more time to sift through what they called copious amounts of material.

Higgins is currently being charged as adult for two felonies, conspiring to commit first-degree murder and conspiring to commit first-degree murder after deliberation.

The next big step in the court proceedings is the preliminary hearing and reversed transfer hearing scheduled for three days in May. When the hearing takes place her attorneys will try to argue that her case should be transferred back to juvenile court.

Her attorneys also requested that Higgins have at least one hand free from shackles because her wrists are red and cut.

Both Higgins and Johnson remain in custody.

They had plans to kill students and teachers at their high school, but the plot was thwarted by Text-A-Tip hotline.
