December Snow Outlook Hopeful As Snowpack Runs Well Below Normal

By Chris Spears

DENVER (CBS4) - The meteorological winter is beginning with statewide snowpack running well below where it should be for this time of year.

The deficit is due to a record warm and exceptionally dry fall.

All of Colorado's eight major river basins are behind where they should be with the driest conditions in the South Platte River Basin (44% or normal).

The latest 30-day outlook from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is calling for wetter and cooler-than-normal conditions for Colorado during December, which will be great for building snowpack if it pans out.

Light snow is expected Friday in the mountains as a weak weather system passes by, with heavier snow possible as a stronger storm moves in next week.
