Deadly Ice Cave Collapse In Washington Claims 1, Injures 4

GRANITE FALLS, Wash. (CBS4) - An ice cave in Washington State collapsed on Monday evening, killing one person and injuring four others.

Big Four Ice Caves is about 70 miles northeast of Seattle, in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Warm temperatures have been melting the ice, making ice caves less stable and vulnerable to collapse.

Three of the injured people were airlifted to a Seattle Trauma Center, and one man is in critical condition. A young girl was sent to a hospital in Everett, Washington.

Forest Service officials said the situation is still a recovery mission because they have to retrieve the body of the man killed in the collapse.

Park officials say there are numerous signs that warn hikers against going into caves because of the falling ice.
