Deadly Car Chase Began With Home Invasion At Rural Grow House

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - One man is dead and another is on the run after a home invasion in rural Boulder County.

The home invasion happened at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at home in Sunshine Canyon. Investigators say two strangers came to the home knowing marijuana was growing there. When the homeowner refused to cooperate one of the suspects pistol-whipped him.

"They demanded marijuana, and when he didn't give it they fired a round at his couch, stole the marijuana, and beat him with the gun," said Commander Heidi Prentup with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department.

The suspects fled, but law enforcement had a description of the vehicle and gave chase as they exited the canyon. Law enforcement retreated in Broomfield when the suspects got out of control.

"We stopped the pursuit because it was so erratic and dangerous," Prentup said.

One of the suspects was located later in the day in Longmont, driving a different vehicle. Police again pursued this suspect, to the corner of US 85 and West Bromley Lane in Brighton. The suspect emerged from his vehicle with a firearm and officers responded with shots fired. He died on the scene.

Identities of the suspects have not yet been released. Investigators say the suspects shared an acquaintance with the victim. The homeowner declined to speak with CBS4.

The second suspect is still on the run and faces robbery charges.
