Biker Who Hit Hiker Could Face Serious Charges If Caught
MORRISON, Colo. (CBS4) - Safety warning signs are up in Lair o' the Bear Park as Jefferson County deputies investigate an unusual hit-and-run incident. The popular park is located just west of Red Rocks Park and the town of Morrison.
An 86-year-old hiker was walking along the Caster Cutoff trail in the morning on Sept. 10 when he heard a bicyclist approaching and tried to move over. The cyclist wound up hitting and injuring him.
The cyclist shouted out a question: "Are you alright?" The hiker said no, but the cyclist still rode off. The man wound up with suffered several cuts and a fractured elbow.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is now asking for help tracking that cyslist down. He is described as being a white man in his 20s or 30s, and he wasn't wearing a bike helmet. If caught he could face a felony assault charge.
People who frequent the trail told CBS4 this week they'll be keeping an eye out for such a person.
"We use this trail a lot and it's sad that one guy makes the rest of us look bad," Crystal Deboer told CBS4.
The new signs that have been placed in the park warn of "discourteous mountain bikers in the area." Trail rules state that pedestrians must yield to horses and their riders and cylists must yield to both horse riders and pedestrians.
