Helmet Credited With Saving Climber's Life After Fall

CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A man from New York survived a bad fall during a hike in southern Colorado.

Search and rescue crews credited the man's helmet with saving his life.

Tim Huneck, 57, and his son were climbing the Crestone Needle when he slipped and fell about 30 feet Friday night.

Huneck's son went for help and crews were able to pull the injured man to safety.

Cindy Howard with Custer County Search and Rescue called it "an extremely difficult technical rescue."

His exact condition hasn't been released but rescuers say he suffered several fractures.
