Construction Will Close Major Cherry Creek Intersection For Days

DENVER (CBS4) - In Cherry Creek, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

But construction crews in the area say that won't take long.

Construction that has torn up streets and slowed down traffic at one of the city's busiest intersections will close First Avenue and University Boulevard for two and a half days starting Saturday evening.

Crews hope the full closure will help them complete work on storm sewers and street paving projects three weeks earlier than expected.

The intersection will be closed from 7 p.m. on Saturday to 7 a.m. on Tuesday. RTD buses will be detoured.

"The retailers are very pleased we are going to have an early completion to this project," Nancy Kuhn of Denver Public Works said. "They know that this intersection closure will be impactful, but I think it will be less impactful than if we did it in several phases, than in one phases. They're happy that we're going to be out of here much sooner than we planned."

The project is supposed to be completed by Nov. 1.
