Congressman Holds Contest For Naming Of Wilderness Bill

DENVER (CBS4) - Rep. Jared Polis is reaching out to the public for help naming a bill that intends to protect Colorado wilderness.

The unnamed bill aims to continue the state's legacy of preserving public lands for future generations, and would protect areas in Eagle and Summit Counties. Proposed places include Spraddle Creek, Porcupine Gulch, the Tenmile Range, Hoosier Ridge, and the Williams Fork mountains.

In a news release, Polis said the bill would, "ensure that hiking, biking, fishing, and hunting access and forest health are sustained for generations to come."

As for the naming process, he said the bill is a result of locally-driven stakeholders and should therefore be locally named. Some of the stakeholders supporting the wilderness preservation include Arapahoe Basin, Eagle County, Town of Breckenridge, and Vail Resorts.

A contest is being held for Coloradans to name the new wilderness and recreation bill. The suggestion period lasts until Friday May 15, and you can submit your ideas through email.

The introduction of this bill is the first step in a legislative process.
