Compromise Met On Tax Battle Over Parking Issue In Breckenridge

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - Voters in Breckenridge will go to the polls this November to decide on a proposed tax on Breckenridge Ski Resort in order to fund parking in the town.

After months of back-and-forth negotiations Vail Resorts and the town agreed on a new compromise. If passed, the resort will provide the town with at least $3.5 million every year to help fund new parking upgrades.

Under the deal the town won't ask for taxes from all lift ticket sales but only a portion each year.

"In the spirit of compromise, the Council felt this amount would be adequate to begin to work on the much needed improvements for this vital issue for our community," Breckenridge Mayor John Warner said in a statement. "The community has been telling us that parking and transit are an extremely important issue for the future of Breckenridge.

"Although we may not always agree, a positive relationship with the ski area is important and the Council felt this compromise still meets the community's needs. It is still important for our citizens to remain engaged and to vote in favor of this tax in the November 3rd election."

The proposed tax, if passed, will begin July 1, 2016
