Commerce City Cop Fatally Kills Aggressive Dog After It Bit Him

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - A police officer shot and killed a charging, aggressive dog in Commerce City on Wednesday as officers approached a home during an investigation.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., two officers arrived at a residence in the 7300 block of East 82nd Ave. to investigate a child abuse report.

While approaching the home, the mixed-breed dog -- approximately 40 to 50 pounds -- charged out of the house and through the front gate, police said. The dog immediately bit one of the officers' legs and didn't let go. The officer fired his gun once, striking and killing the dog.

Police didn't release either officer's name. The wounded officer has been released from a hospital after treatment. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave per department procedure.

Investigations into the shooting and the child abuse case are ongoing. Police said the dog's owners are cooperating, and criminal charges haven't been filed.
