Colorado Students Hit The Sidewalk For National Walk To School Day

DENVER (CBS4)- Students across Colorado laced up their sneakers and hit the sidewalk for National Walk To School Day on Wednesday.

Students at Teller Elementary School were among those participating in the event.

The idea behind walking to school is to get kids up and moving to start the day. The campaign also alerts drivers to slow down when traveling through communities with schools.

"I always talk to my mom on the phone. She likes to know that I got to school safely," said one student.

The students were rewarded with glow in the dark bracelets and other safety items to help them get to school.

The campaign is also designed to raise awareness about improving sidewalks and street crossings as well as the behavior of pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.
