Colorado Senate Gives Nod To 1st Police Oversight Measure

DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Senate has given unanimous approval to the first in a series of measures to increase oversight on law enforcement in reaction to state and national cases of suspected police misdeeds.

The bill approved Monday would allow law enforcement agencies to look at officers' job histories before hiring them to find out whether they have lied during an investigation or have been accused of using excessive force.

Currently, officers can negotiate nondisclosure agreements upon their departure from a job to block access to their personnel records.

The bill faces a more formal vote before heading to the House. Several other measure pertaining to police misconduct are heading for votes, including a measure to change how officer-involved shootings are investigated.
