Colorado Remembers 9/11 To Mark 15th Anniversary Of Attacks

DENVER (CBS4)- Fifteen years after the terror attack on 9/11, people in Colorado will gather to remember the victims and pay tribute to first responders who put their lives in danger. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks in New York City, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

This year, leaders across the state are planning a tribute concert and gathering in Civic Center Park.

"This is going to be a big, loud shout out to all of our first responders and to recognize not just those in New York City during 9/11 but those all across the country and especially here in Denver," said Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock gathered in Civic Center Park on Monday for a promotional shoot for the event. This year, they say it's especially important to bring people together.

"I think it's important to recognize that right now our country is going through a hard period and I think police officers are more at risk than they have been," said Hickenlooper.

"We're absolutely talking about our police officers, we're talking about our firefighters, we're talking about our paramedics, we're talking about our sheriffs, we're about, of course, men and women in uniform," said Hancock.

"It's very much an honor and it is nice that the public recognizes what we do," said one Denver firefighter.

Hickenlooper and Hancock plan to dance the night away because while the concert will be somber at times, the event is designed to be both meaningful and fun.

But the question remains, who has the better dance moves, Hickenlooper or Hancock?

When asked if Hickenlooper could out dance him, Hancock responded, "No way. Can't even come close."

The event begins at noon and continues until 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 in Civic Center Park. The event is free and everyone is invited. CBS4 is a proud sponsor of the event.
