DENVER (CBS4)- Early Tuesday morning, Hurricane Matthew hit land and tore through the country of Haiti. Now a Colorado organization, devoted to helping the area rebuild from natural disasters, is having to start over.

Jackie Martin with the Colorado Haiti Project says the hardest hit areas have yet to be seen.

"It's been pretty awful because we have not been able to still to this moment to have a cell phone connection with anyone in that region," said Martin.

The group has been aiding the country for years, focusing on everything from education, to community health and infrastructure.

Most recently their efforts helped rebuild after an earthquake left much of the country in ruins.

"We just can't fathom that something of this magnitude would be hitting so soon after the earthquake just all of the work that we have done to help them rebuild from that," Martin said.

While the information coming in is preliminary, Martin says many of the homes have been destroyed, crops washed away and dozens of people left once again with little to nothing to live on.

Still their biggest questions have yet to be answered.

"God forbid... we're so nervous about the human cost, the lives. We're just still praying because we have not heard from our friends in the region yet," said Martin.

Right now organizers with the Colorado Haiti Project say their biggest need is donations.
