DMV Appointment Selling A Step Closer To Being A Crime

DENVER (AP) - Colorado is one step closer to outlawing a scam that has targeted immigrants.

A state Senate committee on Monday approved a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to sell government services without government authorization.

The bill is inspired by a scam in which people reserve - or say they've reserved - appointments with the Division of Motor Vehicles. They then sell the slots to immigrants seeking state driver's licenses.

The state allows immigrants who live and pay taxes in Colorado to get a license regardless of their immigration status. Only three DMV offices offer the service, so demand is high.

Attorney General Cynthia Coffman's office says some people reportedly have paid as much as $1,000.

The bill has passed the House and now goes to the Senate floor.
