Colorado Delegates Walk Out After Roll Call Vote At RNC To 'Eat?'
CLEVELAND, Colo. (CBS4/AP) - Republican delegates from Colorado were among the anti-Donald Trump forces who lost a fight Monday to demand a state-by-state roll call vote at the opening of the Republican National Convention.
Anti-Trump delegates wanted a state-by-state roll call vote on the convention's rules. Changing the rules could have allowed only Republicans to vote in primaries and caucuses in the next presidential election. A roll call vote would have meant a drawn-out process and could have exposed party divisions.
There are conflicting attitudes about what happened on the convention floor. Free the Delegates Executive Director Regina Thomson said some members of the Colorado delegation walked out in protest.
But according to delegate and Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams there was no staged walkout. Williams said after the vote many delegates went for something to eat.
"It was like folks leaving a basketball game," Williams said. "There was no staged walkout that I was aware of."
Hundreds of socially conservative delegates opposed to nominating Trump protested noisily after the convention's presiding officer, Arkansas GOP Rep. Steve Womack, abruptly put the rules to a vote and declared them approved by voice.
