Colorado Blizzard Misses Southeast Plains Where Moderate Drought Now Declared

By Chris Spears

DENVER (CBS4) - While parts of eastern Colorado were buried under heavy snow driven by tropical storm force winds on Wednesday, not too far away, residents looked to the sky hoping a little snow would fall.

Colorado's southeast plains missed out on the blizzard and the past few storms that moved through the region.

Within the past year this area recovered from a devastating drought thanks to a wet spring and summer in 2015. But in less than a year things have once again turned dry.

In their weekly update issued Thursday, the U.S. Drought Monitor declared parts of Prowers and most of Baca County to be in D-1 or moderate drought.

Most of southeast Colorado is considered to be abnormally dry.
