Coloradans Reminded That Bears Have Awakened
DENVER (AP) — Wildlife officials are reminding Coloradoans that black bears have awakened from their winter naps and are in search of food.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife says that every year, dozens of bears must be relocated or euthanized because of conflicts with humans, many of which can be avoided.
The state typically has a two-strike policy for bears. The first time a bear becomes persistent in its search for food near humans, it may be trapped, tagged and relocated. If the bear gets into trouble again, it is euthanized.
Wildlife officials say that to discourage bears from seeking food near humans, residents should feed pets indoors, lock up trash, remove birdfeeders, keep grills clean and inside sheds or garages, and lock doors and windows of homes and cars.
