Clear Those Sidewalks Of Snow Or Face A Big Fine

DENVER (CBS4) - As Colorado digs out after this week's winter storm, the City of Denver is issuing a warning to clear those sidewalks.

"Denver residents and business owners are responsible for shoveling their own sidewalks," said Alex Foster with the City of Denver.

Once the snow has stopped falling, businesses have four hours to remove snow and ice, homeowners have 24 hours.

"It's a public safety issue," Foster added.

Since this winter season started the city has issued 83 citations that carry a $150 fine each.

"Our inspectors will check and respond to complaints," Foster said.

Inspectors will always give a warning before they issue a citation.

"We give a friendly reminder," said Jim Holt, an inspector with the City of Denver.

If homeowners are not able to shovel their own sidewalks, they can contact the city which has a Snow Buddy program. That program allows volunteers to help shovel where it's needed.
