Children Found Inside Car Street Racing On I-25

WELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The driver arrested during an alleged street racing incident on Interstate 25 has been charged with child abuse charges after two children were found inside the vehicle.

Deputies with the Weld County Sheriff's Office were notified of two vehicles racing on I-25 about 9:16 p.m. on Saturday.

A deputy watched a red 2015 Ford Mustang and another vehicle that looked similar to a Kia Soul engaged in what appeared to be a speed contest in the northbound lanes of I-25. The vehicles were traveling at speeds of more than 120 mph.

When the deputy made contact with the Mustang it was traveling more than 100 mph. The vehicle had four passengers including a 7-month-old in a front-facing child seat and an unrestrained 5-year-old.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office wants to remind drivers that all children under the age of one year old or less than 20 pounds must be restrained in a rear-facing child seat in the rear of the vehicle. All children under the age of eight must be in a proper child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle.
