Chemicals Found Inside Thornton Home Remain A Mystery

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- What specific chemicals caused an evacuation of six homes and the closure of an elementary school in Thornton may never be known.

Hazmat crews were called to a home near 135th and Fillmore in Thornton after chemicals were discovered inside on Monday, including a small quantity of illegal substances.

The discovery forced the early dismissal of Tarver Elementary School on Monday. The school remained closed on Tuesday. Students were out of class again on Wednesday, but that was to observe the Veterans Day holiday but will return to class on Thursday.

The families evacuated from their homes on Monday were allowed to return Monday night but then evacuated again Tuesday morning when investigators returned to the home in question.

A small amount of illegal chemicals was discovered but then destroyed. Authorities described the substance as being somewhat volatile.

The FBI, ATF, Adams County Bomb Disposal Unit, Thornton Fire and Tri-County Health were at the home investigating the chemicals found. Investigators confirm that the discovery is related to an explosion and suicide at the home.
