Chandelier In Phantom Of The Opera Is Major Player

DENVER (CBS4)- One of the big props in Phantom of the Opera is the big chandelier.

In the original production it's huge and moves all over the place-- from the stage to high above the crowd to the stage again at the end of the first act.

In the spectacular new production of Phantom, hitting the Buell Theatre on Aug. 25, there are some changes.

"I think the only thing that hasn't come out from the fourth wall is the proscenium , we've now contained everything within the box and we've moved the chandelier so it becomes a more intrical piece and fixture within the theatre itself," said Asst. Director and Executive Producer of Phantom Steph Sklar-Heyn.

One thing, the chandelier seems smaller which would make it easier to transport. It's also able to move faster. And it's loaded with pyrotechnics for special effects throughout the show.

"And when this production originated in the UK, it only did a few things and it played a role in a nominal way. It was then re-engineered before it came to the U.S. in a few shops in Holland and it was given so much more capability and the ability to really respond to action on stage as if it were sort of embodying the personality of the Phantom whenever he has a reaction," said Sklar-Heyn.
