CenturyLink Offers 1 Gig Internet Speeds In Denver
DENVER (CBS4) - The Mile High City is a big city. It's now also a "gig city."
Broadband and telephone service provider CenturyLink announced on Monday that it's providing one-gigabit-per-second Internet speeds to some Denver neighborhoods and businesses.
One gigabit is the equivalent of 1,000 megabits. The company said the new service is up to 100 times faster than the national average of 10 megabits per second. It costs $79.95 a month when combined with other services.
Gov. John Hickenlooper said the upgrade exemplifies Colorado's commitment to improving its high-tech infrastructure.
"Colorado has become a nationally recognized incubator for innovative startups, with five of the top 25 metro regions here, because Coloradans keep building, growing, and not settling for good enough," Hickenlooper said. "In today's economy, every gig matters."
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock hailed the development, saying it would help spur business and improve schools.
"Our residents, businesses and schools now move to the front of the technology line," he said.
The company currently offers residential customers speeds up to 40 and 100 Mbps in some areas.
Comcast, a major CenturyLink competitor, offers speeds up to 50 Mbps, according to an offer on its website.
