CDOT Urges Drivers To Plan Ahead When Traveling

DENVER (CBS4)- The Colorado Department of Transportation is urging drivers to plan ahead and think about when they need to travel into the mountains. It's the latest effort to keep traffic moving along Interstate 70 this winter.

CDOT will study traffic trends on when people will head into the mountains and then back into the city.

There will be a weekend traffic forecast every Thursday that factors events, weather and the Denver Broncos schedule. Businesses will try to keep people in town longer with special discounts.

Hotels will offer special rates to stay the night rather than just making a day trip.

Travelers who are not prepared for the weather conditions will face a $130 fine. Those vehicles that block the road could see the fine increase to more than $650.

"Tires are the most critical and important piece for you to get to your destination safely in winter driving," said Colorado State Patrol Maj. Steve Garcia.
