Campus Gun Proposal Not Headed To Colorado Ballots

DENVER (AP) — Gun-control backers in Colorado have abandoned an effort to ask voters to ban concealed weapons on college campuses, saying the question had become a "political football."

Safe Campus Colorado announced Thursday that it would not put forward petition signatures because the question was becoming an issue in several elections. The group did not elaborate.

Colorado is one of seven states where concealed weapons are allowed on college campuses, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Safe Campus Colorado says the decision to pull the ballot question petition was "very difficult" but that it would still advocate for changing the law.

The ballot measure attempt was a response to a 2012 Colorado Supreme Court ruling that the University of Colorado's policy gun ban violated the state's concealed carry law
