Cal Swimmer Missy Franklin Wins Honda Sports Award

NEW YORK (AP) — California's Missy Franklin has won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top woman in college swimming.

The sophomore from Centennial, Colorado, helped Cal win the NCAA title and set an American record in the 200-yard freestyle and also captured the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke.

The other finalists were Stanford's Simone Manuel, Virginia's Leah Smith and Louisville's Kelsi Worrell. The winner was determined by balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools.

As one of the Honda winners in 12 sports, Franklin becomes eligible for Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year honors, which will be awarded June 29 in Los Angeles.
