BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) – Investigators are trying to figure out how a teenager was killed after getting hit by a vehicle outside of Broomfield High School on Monday.

"It has been determined that a 16-year-old male was standing near the rear driver side door of a vehicle that was parked on the east side of Daphne Street when he was struck by a northbound vehicle, driven by a 17 year old male," police said in a statement.

Britton was taken to the hospital where he died on Tuesday from his injuries.

The driver, who wasn't injured, stopped and waited for police. Police said the driver attends a school in Lafayette. His name hasn't been released because he's a juvenile.

"(The victim) was putting stuff in the back of his car and the other kid wasn't paying attention and just hit him," Broomfield sophomore Alex Omans said. "They don't know if he's going to survive or not."

An investigation is underway to determine exactly what happened.
