"(They put) him in a squad car, and they weren't gentle about it," commented Jim Egli, a witness who lives nearby. "So we knew something bad was going on."

"This is a very sad, tragic event and our hearts go out to the family and especially this young child. This is a very difficult situation for everyone," said Broomfield Police Department spokeswoman Joleen Reefe.

Neighbors were shaken by the crime that brought a swarm of police into the neighborhood.

"It's horrifying. It's sad," said Zach Stroud, in an interview with CBS4's Melissa Garcia.

"I feel horrible for the mom of that little boy," said another neighbor. "Coming from me, having two kids; I don't know what I would do having that call."

Neighbors describe the house residents as a three-generation family who mostly kept to themselves.
