Video: Brewery Tour Ends Unexpectedly For Participants

DENVER (CBS4) - A new video shows a Colorado brewery tour with an unexpected ending. A group set out to enjoy a few beers, but it turns out it was all part of a social experiment.

Unsuspecting passengers got onto a bus thinking they were getting a tour of Denver's breweries. Instead they were taken to school over drinking and driving.

The Colorado Department of Transportation commissioned the video where passengers are drinking -- and so is the driver -- and no one even thinks to ask him to stop drinking, or to not drive.

"People don't seem to care that I'm drinking and driving," said the paid actor who was drinking non-alcoholic beer.

But the passengers didn't know that until the actors revealed that the trip was a hoax, and had he been drinking what they expected, he would be well over the legal limit. The passengers were stunned -- and some brought to tears.

"I don't care if something happens to me, but if I drive somewhere and kill somebody … " one of the participants said in tears.

The video was commissioned to target a new audience.

"We want to move beyond just the slogans 'don't' drink and drive' ... we really want to get laser focused on the behavior that enables drinking and driving," said CDOT spokesman Sam Cole.

CDOT hopes people will watch the video and picture themselves as one of the passengers on the beer tour, and to think how they would act differently in the same situation.

So far more than 200,000 people have seen the video, and CDOT hopes millions more will get the message.
