Breckenridge: Town, Not Voters, Will Decide Pot Shop's Future

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) - The town of Breckenridge will now decide a pot shop's fate, saying a ballot initiative put before voters was too complex.

The Breckenridge Cannabis Club is the town's only recreational marijuana store on the touristy and iconic Main Street, a location some residents say tarnishes the town's family-friendly image.

The owners say moving off Main Street would hurt their business and lower tax revenues for Breckenridge.

"We're really trying to fight and keep our downtown location, but as of right now they've asked us to leave at the end of our lease," Breckenridge Cannabis Club owner Caitlin McGuire told CBS4 in July. The store's lease is up at the end of the summer.

The town council passed a law in 2013 that outlawed pot shops on Main Street.

There are two other recreational stores in the town's northern end. Two of downtown Breckenridge's three medical marijuana facilities went out of business before recreational pot was legalized by voters in 2012.
